Where ‘Lands End’ and Eagles Soar

Published January 20, 2020
Way out on the southern tip of the Kenai Peninsula, near the town of Homer, Alaska, you’ll find the Homer Spit. The ‘Spit’ is a four-and-a-half mile long piece of land jutting out into Kachemak Bay.
It is home to the Homer Boat Harbor, which contains both deep and shallow water docks serving up to 1,500 commercial and “just for fun” boats during summer. The Spit also houses attractions like The Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon, the Salty Dawg Saloon, and more importantly for Backcountry Journey’s purposes, the Land’s End Resort. This is the very cozy, very serene lodge where we’ll meet at the start of our Bald Eagles of Alaska wildlife photo tour.
Located at the very tip of what is the longest road into ocean waters in the entire world (a ten to 115-minute drive by automobile), Land’s End Resort offers million-dollar views of the bay and mountains at Homer’s finest “landing point.”
In 1958, Earl Hillstrand purchased a rare piece of Alaskan waterfront at the very end of the Homer Spit, where he built the Port Wing and Chart Room Restaurant of Land’s End. In those days Dungeness Crab was hauled by hand off the city pier and were plentiful. There wasn’t much to the area at that time, and the 220-mile gravel road from Anchorage took an entire day, but Alaskans flocked anyway.

Spending hours on end around the lobby fireplace, smoking his pipe and welcoming guests as extended family, Hillstrand built Land’s End‘s reputation as the place where Earl’s smile and Kachemak Bay would greet you at the door. Today that tradition lives on with the current management and staff, who are as delightful as the restaurant’s delicious Alaskan Bouillabaisse, or King Crab Legs!

Each day of our Bald Eagles of Alaska tour, we’ll board our privately chartered vessel and explore the coast of Kachemak Bay in search of Bald eagles. Finding these glorious birds won’t be difficult, as the area is home to thousands during the spring and offers one of the best opportunities to get amazing and close-up photographs. We’ll make images while on the boat, as well as from the beach.
We won’t stop at only photographing only eagles. We’ll keep our eyes peeled for other various seabirds and marine life such as puffin, sea otter, and harbor seals, too.
We love our visits to Homer, and are especially excited about this year’s tour which is on the horizon!

Our March 22nd to 26th tour surprisingly has one spot still available!

Don’t delay, snag your spot today, and come spend time with us down at the end of the Homer Spit, where the land ends at Lands End, and the eagles soar!

 We offer world-class travel photography
experiences
around the world.

Each tour is bundled with lodging, meals, and transportation between workshops included, allowing you to focus on photography instead of the stress of traveling.
